Phillipstown Community Market and Gala DayIt may have rained -- a lot -- but the Phillipstown Community Market and Gala Day took place on Saturday 19th November. A good number of people braved the weather to join us at the Hub, and enjoy the stalls (brought indoors or under the veranda) and variety of food from around the world. Due to the circumstances, Spice of Life ended up being different but, in its way, awesome!
|
Sustainability is an important aspect of the Phillipstown Community Hub, so we tried to make our Gala Day a waste free event: instead of disposable plates and cups, we used normal cutlery and crockery, reusable cups and compostable containers (when needed). We also sewed all our bunting ourselves (thank you Evelyn!). This effort made us win the Gran Price in the Wise about Waste: Workplace Challenge 2022!

Phillipstown Murals WalkThe Phillipstown Murals Walk is part of the Phillipstown Walks project.
The Phillipstown Walks is a series of free, resident-led guided walks within Phillipstown that celebrate local history and the knowledge residents hold. This walk focused on discovering the pieces of street art that colour the walls of many building in our neighbourhood. This walk was organised in collaboration with Watch this Space. Reuben Woods, Watch this Space creative director (whose PhD focused on graffiti and street art within post-earthquake Christchurch) led our tour around Phillipstown. The walk started from the Linwood Congregational Church lawn, and finished at the Phillipstown Community Hub for a coffee or a juice and a chat about the walk and the street art in Phillipstown. |
The Phillipstown Murals walk, along with other Phillipstown Walks held since 2021, is available in map form for anyone to explore the neighbourhood - go to the PoPping around page to download the maps, and have fun!

Play Streets in Percy St.Occupy the street and ... play!!!
On Sunday 4 September, on a beautiful sunny and windy day, Percy street was temporarily closed to allow local residents to meet, socialise and play! It was a very nice, low key, unformal afternoon with children and once-upon-a-time-kids playing together and connect, with long term residents and newbies (a family that came down from Wellington last week!) familiarising and connecting and with a lot of ice-cream: welcome Spring! We hope this will be just the first of many Street events in the Neighbourhood! Otautahi Play Streets are part of the Innovating Streets for People project founded by Waka Kotahi Transport Agency. |
On the 4 August, at a very well attended Annual General Meeting, members of the community, representatives of the groups based at the Hub and elected members listened to the Report from the Chairperson, Alicia Ward, the financial report from the, at the time, acting Treasurer, Chris Chapman, and the report from the Manager, Viviana Zanetti.
With Alicia Ward, the chairperson for almost 4 years, not seeking re-election, the role of Chairperson was offered to Bryan Gilchrist who enthusiastically accepted. Chris Chapman was officially appointed as Treasurer and Pam Hughes was confirmed Secretary.
The Trust is composed by Bryan, Chris, Pam, Alicia, one of the original founders, John Wooles, who has been serving without interruptions since 1998 and Daniel Mataki.
We also listened to the farewell our faithful City Councillor Cr Yani Johanson who in all the past years have been an incredible supporter of Phillipstown. From October, Phillipstown will be included in the Central Ward and in the Innes-Central-Papanui Ward, with Jani running for Linwood.

The appearance of the Matariki star cluster - made up of nine stars - welcomes in Te Tau Hou, the New Year.
Matariki is a time for celebration, growth and renewal, it is “a gathering point for all people to come together and celebrate what has happened in the year gone and let it go. To celebrate who we are presently and to wish for the promise of a new season and a new year.” For the first time ever, Aotearoa New Zealand is celebrating Matariki with a public holiday on Friday 24 June 2022. We are celebrating Matariki with a Treasure Hunt: from Saturday 18 June to Saturday 2 July 2022 watch out for the Stars in Phillipstown and complete the Treasure Hunt |

Pink Ribbon at the HubHow scary is it when you think you feel a lump? Panic can freeze us and it might be easier to try to forget about it, to postpone any decision.
But the earlier a lump is found, the more options you have for effective treatment. Anyone can get breast cancer. Men and women. Young and old. So, every adult should be breast aware. Breast awareness is being familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts, so that you can identify any unusual changes (such as a new lump). Breast awareness is developed by talking about it, sharing experiences, information and support. For the second year, we at the Hub have organised our small Pink Ribbon gathering. It was cosy, easy-going, fun and entertaining: we had a good time together socialising but also raising awareness and a bit of money in support of the the Breast Cancer Foundation. |
Wairuatanga: blessing cerimonyOn the 20th April 2022 we blessed and donated a name to the wooden cabin(the Sheshed) that was donated to the Trust in December 2020.
Actually, the 20th of April was the "wrong day": anything that could have gone wrong went wrong. Or almost anything :) Already immediately after emailing all the invitations, we realised that we picked the wrong date. It was in the middle of Ramadan: how disprispectful for our Muslim friends who were fasting and not be able to join us for lunch. |
|
We should have stopped the ceremony from happening when Wendy (Hoddinott) and Jonny (Hall) arrived at the Hub the Wednesday before, thinking it was the right day. that was clearly another "sign" that, unfortunately, we did ignore. The illumination finally arrived when the day before the blessing Natalie tested positive to COVID and Daniel, the kaumatua, remembered that he had a hospital appointment at the same time of the meeting.
But, as we all know, the show must go on and so we did! The central area of the Hub is without doubt the beating heart of our communities. All our events, gatherings, meetings happen here in this embracing area where people can sit together and share kai. The Hub wouldn’t be what we are now if Greening the Rubble, now the Green Lab, hadn’t built it in 2018 around that lonely pizza oven that Simon Gray donated us in March 2017. Have I already said that the Phillipstown Community Hub attracts amazing people? 😊 |
In January 2021 this central area was enriched with the Imaginarium, the colourful children play area close to a beautiful tree. The design and the building of the Imaginarium was an innovative project between the PCCCT and Dr Wendy Hoddinott, Gather Landscape Architecture and Jonathan Hall. The Imaginarium is the result of 2 weeks of work with children of our OSCA programme, aiming to explore meaningful ways for children to participate in designing their outdoor environment.
For those who do not know, the Imaginarium has been shortlisted for the Resene New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architecture Awards 2022 (in the category "He iti Pounamu"). This is so exciting and proves the value of thinking different. Finger cross now!
In December 2020 the Hub received this beautiful to become a cafeteria for our whanau. After adding a solar panel system in October last year, we were ready to officially open it, but you know, Omicron happened and we had to postpone.
Today, finally is the day - the wrong day, as already stated - the blessing and name giving. A wrong day is like the unbirthday for Alice in Wonderland: absolutely worth of celebration!
So on the 20th April we celebrated the Wairuatanga, the new addition to the Kotahitanga area, a place where unity and collaboration meet community wellbeing, inspiration and innovation!

Easter Fun at the Hub - 14 April 2022 from 5 to 7pm
We were very excited to be able to organise the first event of the year after all the restrictions imposed by the Red Light of the COVID-19 Protection Framework! The perfect excuse for getting back together after these trying times! Let's have fun, chat to each other, connect and spend quality time together as community.
Easter Fun evening at the Phillipstown Community Hub! Thursday 14 April 2022 from 5 to 7pm Games, fun and chocolate eggs for children of all ages (yes, also for you not so much a child anymore!). |

It was a great afternoon: so many kids, so many parents, so much chocolate! Thanks to the amazing donation from St Paul's Trinity Pacific Presbyterian Church, we had plenty of chocolate eggs for children and once-upon-a-time children.
It was fantastic to reconnect after the long months of restrictions!
The games (by The Cheshire Cat Company Limited) were very popular and the food scrumptious as it is always at the Hub!
A huge, huge, huge thank you to all the friends who volunteered and supervised the games, baked pizza, warmed up cross buns and prepared hot chocolate with marshmallows! As usual, we wouldn’t have done it without them all!
(The event was in collaboration with Canterbury Refugee Resettlement and Resource Centre)

• To Davon for preparing the dough and then baking pizza and to Max for cooking an amazing (spicy hot!!) curry for all the volunteers.
It was a gorgeous day: the weather was stunning, a lot of aroha was spread around the place and the food was special!

A huge thumb up to Davon for baking a real Italian pizza (without pineapple!!). Simon Gray, we miss you but we have found a good alternative while you are elsewhere busy. We alsotalked about the future Lancaster Park redevelopment with Rory, from Council, and the Phillipstown Community Mapping!

We ended 2021 with a Community Conversation that updated you about the Lancaster Park redevelopment project, the status of the works and the future plans.
In recent years, the redevelopment works have focused on the remediation of the land and - in consultation with sports clubs - the reinstatement of sports fields (three rectangular fields and a cricket block).
The Park is expected to be open to the public by ANZAC Day 2022 after the construction of the main pathway.
The December meeting was well attended and we had the opportunity to start the conversation about what developments the local communities surrounding the park would like to see.
It's your time to have a say on the development of the community spaces in the park!
Join the Community Conversations and tell us what you would like to see happening in Lancaster Park!
