The Imaginarium

Over the course of two weeks in the 2020  summer, 21 children who were enrolled in the OSCAR school holiday programme at Phillipstown Hub took part in a design-build project for their play area.
The project followed a design thinking process, exploring meaningful ways for children to participate in designing their outdoor environment.

By allowing children to lead the decision-making process, the final outcome has been a true reflection of their experiences and aspirations, not just our assumptions of the kind of space they would like to play in.

Through the design thinking process, the children were able to show us uses of space, and issues which are not always obvious to adults. We were able to see first-hand what children are capable of, through a process traditionally reserved for adults.
The Imaginarium has been shortlisted for the Resene New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architecture Awards 2022 (in the category "He iti Pounamu")
We’ve also learned that a rich outcome is possible when we focus on children’s lived experiences of space rather than our adult abstract concepts which typically exclude children from public space design.

The process has been documented by local filmmaker John Sellwood and here is the video!
Nothing of this would have been possible without: Gather Landscape Architecture, Telling Lives, Rotary Club, Lions Club Ferrymead, Hamptons ITM

Kotahitanga

Kotahitanga, is a community gathering space which opened 25th of March 2018 designed and created by The Green Lab together with the Hub whanau.
Named by the community who it was built with and for, Kotahitanga means togetherness, unity, solidarity, collective action. It was designed to be a space which reflects its name, offering facilities for cooking and sharing kai (food), performances, workshops, and meetings.

The Green Lab (at the time, Greening the Rubble) started consultation with the community at the Phillipstown Hub in April 2017, working with focus groups to determine what their wider community wanted and needed from the space.
The completed facility has two roofed structures with a pizza/bread oven, dining tables and chairs, a bench space and a raised wooden stage. The area is surrounded by gardens and is modular and moveable. Since its completion, Kotahitanga has hosted numerous events; from communal dinners and lunch meetings, to workshops and community festivals.

Both the design and construction of Kotahitanga were made possible through the generous donation of both people’s time and construction materials. The support from the Christchurch City Council and the generous contributions of local businesses was been invaluable to the success and scope of this project. To all the volunteers, sponsors and supporters, thank you!
